In 1917, Roger Nash Baldwin became head of the National Civil Liberties Bureau (NCLB), an independent outgrowth of the
American Union Against Militarism, which opposed American intervention in World War I. The NCLB provided legal advice and
aid for conscientious objectors and those being prosecuted under the Espionage Act of 1917 or the Sedition Act of 1918. In
1920, the NCLB changed its name to the American Civil Liberties Union, with Baldwin continuing as its director. Jeannette
Rankin, Crystal Eastman and Albert DeSilver, along with other former members of the NCLB, assisted Baldwin with the
founding of the ACLU. [1]
In the year of its birth, the ACLU was formed to protect aliens threatened with deportation, and U.S. nationals threatened with
criminal charges by U.S. Attorney General Alexander Mitchell Palmer for their communist or socialist activities and agendas
(see Palmer Raids). It also opposed attacks on the rights of the Industrial Workers of the World (IWW) and other labor unions
to meet and organize.
In 1940, the ACLU formally barred communists from leadership or staff positions, and would take the position that it did not
want communists as members either. The board declared that it was "inappropriate for any person to serve on the governing
committees of the Union or its staff, who is a member of any political organization which supports totalitarian dictatorship in
any country, or who by his public declarations indicates his support of such a principle." [2] The purge, which was led by
Baldwin, himself a former supporter of Communism, began with the ouster of Elizabeth Gurley Flynn, a member of both the
Communist Party of the USA and the IWW [3].
In the 1988 presidential election, then-Vice President George H.W. Bush called then-Governor Michael Dukakis a
"card-carrying member of the ACLU," which Dukakis proudly acknowledged. [4] The phrase now serves as part of a jocular
recruitment slogan for the ACLU.
The September 11, 2001 attacks and the ensuing debate regarding the proper balance of civil liberties and security including
the passage of the USA PATRIOT Act led to a 20% increase in membership between August 2001 and December 2002, when
total enrollment reached 330,000 [5]. The growth continued, and in August 2004, ACLU membership was at 400,000.
The ACLU and its affiliated tax-exempt foundation receive annual support from the Ford, Rockefeller, Carnegie, Field, Tides,
Gill, Arcus, Horizons, and other foundations.
In October of 2004, the ACLU rejected $1.5 million from both the Ford and Rockefeller Foundations. The Foundations had
adopted language from the USA PATRIOT Act into their donation agreements, including a clause stipulating that none of the
money would go to "underwriting terrorism or other unacceptable activities." The ACLU views this clause, both in Federal law
and in the donors' agreements, as a threat to civil liberties.

WASHINGTON - President Obama said that comments by Supreme Court nominee Sonia Sotomayor in a 2004 speech in which she called for the "castration of all white males until they are no longer dominant," have been "taken out of context" by right wing ideologues. In the speech delivered to the San Juan chapter of NOW, Sotomayor said, "I want to be perfectly clear about this next comment so that there is no mistaking my words to mean something other than what they plainly say: the time has come to end white male oppression by castrating every white male until they are no longer dominant in Western culture. That means forcible removal of their testicles. I realize the brutality of my comment, and I don't know how to say it more clearly." It was revealed that Sotomayor used precisely the same language in seven other speeches. White House spokesman Robert Gibbs agreed with President Obama that the statement "has been taken out of context," and added that Sotomayor "certainly did not mean" that white males should be castrated. "Judge Sotomayor was simply saying that there should be room at the American table for diverse cultures, that's all. It is astounding that people are reading 'castration' into it." President Obama told MSNBC: "Look, when Judge Sotomayor appears before the Senate committee, all this nonsense being spewed out by ideologues will be revealed for what it is." |
| LETTER FROM THE BOSS: As the CEO of this organization, I have resigned myself to the fact that Barrack Obama is our President and that our taxes and government fees will increase in a BIG way. To compensate for these increases, our prices would have to increase by about 10%. But since we cannot increase our prices right now due to the dismal state of the economy, we will have to lay off sixty of our employees instead. This has really been bothering me, since I believe we are family here and I didn't know how to choose who would have to go. So, this is what I did. I walked through our parking lots and found sixty 'Obama' bumper stickers on our employees' cars and have decided these folks will be the ones to let go. I can't think of a more fair way to approach this problem. They voted for change, I gave it to them. I will see the rest of you at the annual company picnic. |

Michael Richards better known as Kramer from TVs Seinfeld does make a good point. This was his defense speech in court after making racial comments in his comedy act. He makes some very interesting points... Someone finally said it. How many are actually paying attention to this? There are African Americans, Mexican Americans, Asian Americans, Arab Americans, etc. And then there are just Americans. You pass me on the street and sneer in my direction. You call me 'White boy,' 'Cracker,' 'Honkey,' 'Whitey,' 'Caveman'... and that's OK. But when I call you, Nigger, Kike, Towel head, Sand-nigger, Camel Jockey, Beaner, Gook, or Chink. You call me a racist. You say that whites commit a lot of violence against you... So why are the ghettos the most dangerous places to live? You have the United Negro College Fund. You have Martin Luther King Day. You have Black History Month. You have Cesar Chavez Day. You have Yom Hashoah. You have Ma'uled Al-Nabi. You have the NAACP. You have BET.... If we had WET (White Entertainment Television), we'd be racists. If we had a White Pride Day, you would call us racists. If we had White History Month, we'd be racists. A white woman could not be in the Miss Black American pageant, but any color can be in the Miss America pageant. If we had a college fund that only gave white students scholarships... You know we'd be racists. There are over 60 openly proclaimed Black Colleges in the US..... Yet if there were 'White colleges', that would be a racist college. In the Million Man March, you believed that you were marching for your race and rights. If we marched for our race and rights, you would call us racists. You are proud to be black, brown, yellow and orange, and you're not afraid to announce it. But when we announce our white pride, you call us racists. You rob us, carjack us, and shoot at us. But, when a white police officer shoots a black gang member or beats up a black drug dealer running from the law and posing a threat to society, you call him a racist. I am proud... But you call me a racist. Why is it that only whites can be racists?? There is nothing improper about this e-mail.. Let's see which of you are proud enough to send it on. I sadly don't think many will. That's why we have LOST most of OUR RIGHTS in this country. We won't stand up for ourselves! BE PROUD TO BE WHITE! It's not a crime YET.... but getting very close! |
